Artist Talk

Judy Walgren in conversation with Ann Jastrab
Critical Photojournalism, Contemporary Ethics and Practices book by Tara Pixley and Judy Walgren.

11 AM on Sunday, October 19th in the Harvey Milk Center for the Arts Ballroom (upstairs from the Photo Center)

Click to read about the talk and speakers.

An essential introduction to the complexities of visual representation, this book offers a critical new framework for understanding and practicing photojournalism in a global digital context. Drawing on their extensive industry and teaching experience, the authors provide real-world advice on how to navigate the demands of the profession while addressing the impact that photojournalism has on society and ways that photojournalists can mitigate harm. This is a key textbook for those seeking a nuanced introduction to visual journalism and/or a fresh approach to their craft.

Judy Walgren is a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist and co-author of Critical Photojournalism: Contemporary Ethics and Practices (with Tara Pixley). She is chair of the Photography Department at Foothill College in the Bay Area, where she has revitalized the program, including the reopening of its darkroom. Over her decades-long career, Walgren has worked as a staff photojournalist, photo editor, and director of photography at major news organizations in Dallas, Denver, and San Francisco. Before joining Foothill, she served as associate director of the Michigan State University School of Journalism, where she also revitalized the visual journalism curriculum. Her students have gone on to earn prestigious Hearst Foundation recognition, competitive internships, and professional roles across the field.

Ann Jastrab is the Executive Director of the Center for Photographic Art (CPA) in Carmel, California, an organization dedicated to advancing photography through education, exhibitions, and publications. Building on the legacy of CPA’s predecessor—the renowned Friends of Photography, founded in 1967—CPA honors West Coast traditions of craft, mentorship, and dedication to the photographic arts while remaining at the forefront of contemporary image-making. Previously, Jastrab served for a decade as gallery director at RayKo Photo Center in San Francisco, where she established a thriving artist-in-residence program that helped launch the careers of many photographers, several of whom went on to receive Guggenheim Fellowships and other prestigious awards
