FAQ

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE LIMITED AND UNLIMITED MEMBERSHIPS?

Both memberships offer the same thing: access to the facilities during open hours, usage of shared developing chemistry, and access to the digital lab’s scanners and printers.

The difference between the two plans is the upfront cost. The Limited membership is $88 for 6 months and every day a limited member uses the Photo Center’s facilities is $8 for the day. The Unlimited membership is $221 for 6 months with no additional charges. Under both memberships, digital printing has additional fees.

DO YOU ALLOW MEMBERS TO DEVELOP COLOR FILM OR DO COLOR DARKROOM PRINTING?

The Photo Center does not have facilities, equipment, or chemistry for color film development or color darkroom printing, and do not plan to provide such services.

Our digital lab scanners can scan already-developed color film, and our inkjet printer can print from color film scans.

WHAT IF A MEMBER BRING THEIR OWN COLOR CHEMISTRY?

We do not allow C-41, E-6, ECN-2, RA-4, or any other color processing chemistry in any form at the Photo Center.

CAN I UPGRADE MY PLAN?

We are unable to upgrade any current memberships. If you wish to upgrade your membership, you may do so at the time of your renewal date.

IS DARKROOM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED?

All prospective members must complete the free Photo Center Orientation before purchasing a new membership package. Registration and payment for new members must be done in person at the Photo Center any day after completing the orientation.

While extensive darkroom experience is not required, we strongly recommend that new members consider taking our Darkroom Essentials and Processes and make the most of your Harvey Milk Photo Center experience.

IS DIGITAL PRINTING INCLUDED IN THE PRICE OF MEMBERSHIP?

Membership comes with access to the large format inkjet printers in our digital lab. However, the price of digital printing is not included in the membership.

We charge 13 cents per square inch on paper provided by the center and charge for the entire sheet, and 10 cents per square inch on paper provided by the member, and only charge for the printed area.

Example: Member prints a 5×7 image on 8.5×11 inch paper
On HMPC paper: charged for the entire 8.5×11 inch sheet at 13 cents per square inch
8.5 inches * 11 inches = 93.5 square inches * $0.13 = $12.15
On Member’s paper: only charged for 5×7 inch printed area at 10 cents per square inch.
5 inches * 7 inches = 35 square inches * $0.10 = $3.50

DOES THE PHOTO CENTER PROVIDE DISABILITY ACCESSIBILITY?

Please make requests for disability accommodations by talking to Photo Center Staff, or the SF Rec and Park Inclusion Coordinator at 415-206-1546, TTY 415-242-5700.

Requesting accommodations at least 72 hours prior to the event or activity will help ensure availability.
