Course Description
This introductory class covers all of the key basics in Black and White Darkroom printing: Film development, printing, and critique. Learn the essential steps and key processes to get you on your way to printing your images! Students will gain the techniques to grow in skill and confidence. Instructor will go over the needed materials in the first class. Students should bring an assortment of negatives to class, if available.
This class contains the same information as our Film Camera Basics and Basic Black and White Film Development one-day workshops, in that usage of film cameras will be addressed, and the second day of the class is dedicated to hand processing B&W film.
Requirements
Photo Center Orientation is not required for this class, and students will be considered oriented for membership or day pass purposes after the second week of the class.

Instructor Bio – Marilyn Montúfar
Marilyn Montúfar is a fine art photographer and educator with over ten years of research, production, teaching, and exhibition experience locally, nationally, and internationally. Her work amplifies stories about underrepresented communities through the arts – youth, migrants, women, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ communities. u003cbru003eShe received a BFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts, New York and has a background in race and ethnic studies. Her work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Feria Internacional De La Lectura Yucatán, Mérida, Mexico (2022), Strange Paradise Gallery (2021), Centro de Investigaciones Artísticas Gerónimo Baqueiro Fóster, Mérida, Mexico (2019), Gallery 4Culture, Seattle (2018) among others and has been included in numerous group exhibitions. u003cbru003eu003cbru003eu003cbru003eMontúfar was a finalist for the Betty Bowen Award and Neddy at Cornish Award. She has been an artist in residence at Chautauqua School of Art, Chautauqua, NY, Centrum, Port Townsend, Washington; the Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, Vermont; and Primal Studio, Mexico City; where she created the photography youth project Beyond Borders/ Más allá de las fronteras –a visual collaboration and international exchange program between Mexico and the United States. The project was featured at the Northern Vermont University’s Julian Scott Memorial Gallery, FotoMéxico Festival, and the Tamayo Art Museum’s Education Center in Mexico City in 2019.
Instructor Bio – Chris Gould
Chris Gould is a photographer from Santa Rosa, California who has enjoyed taking pictures since he was a little kid. He studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and works in the black and white analog tradition -finding joy in the craft as well as the results. Chris has worked as a clerk and darkroom tech at the Harvey Milk Photo Center for over 10 years. He currently teaches currently teaches Darkroom Essentials and Processes and Basic Black and White Development.
