Course Description
Learn the basics of black and white film development! In this quick workshop students will be taught how to properly process their black and white film (35mm and/or 120 formats) There are no prerequisites and beginners are encouraged to sign-up. No class time will be spent in the printing darkroom, and color film development will not be covered in this class. In order to participate in the workshop, students must provide their own roll of black and white film that has already been shot through a camera before the start of the workshop. Films such as Ilford HP5+ 400 or Kodak Tri-X 400 are recommended.
Requirement
Photo Center Orientation is not required for this class, and after the film is developed, students will be given an orientation on the Photo Center by the teacher to allow for memberships or day passes

IInstructor Bio – Katherine Akey
Katherine Akey is an artist based in San Francisco, CA where she makes work about polar exploration, World War I, love, and memory. She has an MFA from the International Center of Photography, was a Fellow with the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs, and was the Visiting Assistant Professor in Studio Arts at Corcoran School of the Arts and Design at GWU from 2018-2020. Currently she instructs at Penumbra Foundation, mentors with Image Threads Collective, and is staff at the Harvey Milk Photo Center. Her work has been exhibited internationally and she has participated in several artist residencies including The Arctic Circle, Bonfire Walk; Talk, and the Artist Residency in Motherhood website: http:/www.katherineakey.com
Instructor Bio – John Longyear
John Longyear is a photographer and video artist from Newbury Park, California. He learned how to print in his home darkroom and graduated with a BA in visual arts from the University of California Santa Cruz. His primary foundation is based in traditional black and white printing, but he is interested in pushing the boundaries apparent in the intersection of darkroom and digital practices.
